Meet U.S. Army Specialist
Charlie Simpson, Jr.

Charlie's Story

Mr. Simpson was drafted in to the United States Army in 1968 and went to Basic Training in Fort Ord,

California. After Basic Training, he successfully completed Advanced Infantry Training and later, Jump Training School. He then received orders to join the other brave soldiers in Vietnam.

Mr. Simpson was injured on November 1, 1969, while serving the United States of America, and he was hospitalized in Japan for 39 days. He returned home to the U.S. in November 1969, and recuperated at

the Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, CO, for approximately 1 year. As a result of his combat service-connected injuries, Mr. Simpson lost both of his legs. He received an honorable discharge in 1970, and he was recognized for his tremendous service with the awarding of a Purple Heart and other

prestigious medals.

With such serious injuries, some would have given up, but that’s not Charlie Simpson’s way. After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Simpson returned home to Arkansas, where he met his wife, Brenda, and where they made a tremendously full life together. Mr. and Mrs. Simpson built their home in 1973 and went on to have 5 children. They now have 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren to carry on the legacy of their brave grandfather and great-grandfather.

Although his family has kept him very busy throughout the years, he has also found time for hobbies such as playing pool, riding his handcycle, and playing golf. He is also quite the grill master. Mr. Simpson still lives in Arkansas with his lovely wife Brenda in the same home that they built in 1973.

In 2019 Mr. Simpson was informed about the Specially Adapted Grant through the Veterans Administration. This grant allows him as well as other disabled veterans the opportunity to have modifications and renovations completed on their existing homes. Mr. Simpson began searching for a contractor to assist him with those renovations. After contacting over eleven contractors, he could not find anyone to take on his project. Ironside Legacy was created to partner with veterans to get the renovations completed on their homes. Ironside Legacy’s name comes from Mr. Simpson's call-sign

during his days of communicating on the Citizens Band radio. His challenge became Ironside Legacy’s mission and this mission will not only change the life of Mr. Simpson, it will change the lives of many

veterans in need.
